1And the life of Sarrha was one hundred and twenty-seven years.
1Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.
2And Sarrha died in the city of Arboc, which is in the valley, this is Chebron in the land of Chanaan; and Abraam came to lament for Sarrha and to mourn.
2Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
3And Abraam stood up from before his dead; and Abraam spoke to the sons of Chet, saying,
3Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,
4I am a sojourner and a stranger among you, give me therefore possession of a burying-place among you, and I will bury my dead away from me.
4“I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
5And the sons of Chet answered to Abraam, saying , Not so, Sir,
5The children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
6but hear us; you are in the midst of us a king from God; bury your dead in our choice sepulchres, for not one of us will by any means withhold his sepulchre from you, so that you should not bury your dead there.
6“Hear us, my lord. You are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the best of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb. Bury your dead.”
7And Abraam rose upand did obeisance to the people of the land, to the sons of Chet.
7Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Heth.
8And Abraam spoke to them, saying, If you⌃ have it in your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, listen to me, and speak for me to Ephron the son Saar.
8He talked with them, saying, “If you agree that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
9And let him give me the double cave which he has, which is in a part of his field, let him give it me for the money it is worth for possession of a burying-place among you.
9that he may sell me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field. For the full price let him sell it to me among you as a possession for a burial place.”
10Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the children of Chet, and Ephron the Chettite answered Abraam and spoke in the hearing of the sons of Chet, and of all who entered the city, saying,
10Now Ephron was sitting in the middle of the children of Heth. Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,
11Attend to me, my lord, and hear me, I give to you the fieldand the cave which is in it; I have given it you before all my country men; bury your dead.
11“No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”
12And Abraam did obeisance before the people of the land.
12Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.
13And he said in the ears of Ephron before the people of the land, Since you are on my side, hear me; take the price of the fieldfrom me, and I will bury my dead there.
13He spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me. I will give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”
14But Ephron answered Abraam, saying ,
14Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
15Nay, my lord, I have heard indeed, the land [is worth] four hundred silver didrachmas, but what can this be between me and you? nay, do you bury your dead.
15“My lord, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver between me and you? Therefore bury your dead.”
16And Abraam listened to Ephron, and Abraam rendered to Ephron the money, which he mentioned in the ears of the sons of Chet, four hundred didrachmas of silver approved with merchants.
16Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants’ standard.
17And the field of Ephron, which was in Double Cave, which is opposite Mambre, the field and the cave, which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, and whatever is in its borders round about, were made sure in its borders round about, were made sure
17So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all of its borders, were deeded
18to Abraam for a possession, before the sons of Chet, and all that entered into the city.
18to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
19After this Abraam buried Sarrha his wife in the Double Cave of the field, which is opposite Mambre, this is Chebron in the land of Chanaan.
19After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan.
20So the fieldand the cave which was in itwere made sure to Abraam for possession of a burying place, by the sons of Chet.
20The field, and the cave that is in it, were deeded to Abraham by the children of Heth as a possession for a burial place.
