1Thus has the Lord said concerning MOAB, Woe to Nabau! for it has perished: Cariathaim is taken: Amath and Agath are put to shame .
1Of Moab. Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Woe to Nebo! For it is laid waste. Kiriathaim is disappointed. It is taken. Misgab is put to shame and broken down.
2There is no longer any healing for Moab, [nor] glorying in Esebon: he has devised evils against her: we have cut her off from [being] a nation, and she shall be completely still: after you shall go a sword;
2The praise of Moab is no more. In Heshbon they have devised evil against her: ‘Come! Let’s cut her off from being a nation.’ You also, Madmen, will be brought to silence. The sword will pursue you.
3for [there is] a voice of [men] crying out of Oronaim, destruction and great ruin.
3The sound of a cry from Horonaim, desolation and great destruction!
4Moab is ruined, proclaim [it] to Zogora:
4Moab is destroyed. Her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
5for Aloth is filled with weeping: one shall go up weeping by the way of Oronaim; you⌃ have heard a cry of destruction.
5For they will go up by the ascent of Luhith with continual weeping. For at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.
6Flee you⌃, and save your lives, and you⌃ shall be as a wild ass in the desert.
6Flee! Save your lives! Be like the juniper bush in the wilderness.
7Since you have trusted in your strong-hold, therefore you shall be taken: and Chamos shall go forth into captivity, and his priests, and his princes together.
7For, because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you also will be taken. Chemosh will go out into captivity, his priests and his princes together.
8And destruction shall come upon every city, it shall by no means escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain country shall be completely destroyed, as the Lord has said.
8The destroyer will come on every city, and no city will escape; the valley also will perish, and the plain will be destroyed, as Yahweh has spoken.
9Set marks upon Moab, for she shall be touched with a plague-spot, and all her cities shall become desolate; whence [shall there be] an inhabitant for her?
9Give wings to Moab, that she may fly and get herself away: and her cities will become a desolation, without anyone to dwell in them.
10Cursed is the man that does the works of the Lord carelessly, keeping back his sword from blood.
10“Cursed is he who does the work of Yahweh negligently; and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood.
11Moab has been at ease from a child, and trusted in his glory; he has not poured out [his liquor] from vessel to vessel, and has not gone into banishment, therefore his taste remained in him, and his smell departed not .
11“Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his dregs, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity; therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed.
12Therefore, behold, his days come, says the Lord, when I shall send upon him bad leaders, and they shall lead him astray, and they shall utterly break in pieces his possessions, and shall cut his horns asunder.
12Therefore behold, the days come,” says Yahweh, “that I will send to him those who pour off, and they will pour him off; and they will empty his vessels, and break their containers in pieces.
13And Moab shall be ashamed of Chamos, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Baethel their hope, having trusted in them.
13Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.
14How will you⌃ say, We are strong, and men strong for war?
14“How do you say, ‘We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war’?
15Moab is ruined, [even] his city, and his choice young men have gone down to slaughter.
15Moab is laid waste, and they have gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter,” says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies.
16The day of Moab is near at hand, and his iniquity moves swiftly [to vengeance].
16“The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hurries fast.
17Shake [the head] at him, all you⌃ that are round about him; all [of you] utter his name; say you⌃, How is the glorious staff broken to pieces, the rod of magnificence!
17All you who are around him, bemoan him; and all you who know his name, say, ‘How the strong staff is broken, the beautiful rod!’
18Come down from [your] glory, and sit down in a damp place: Daebon shall be broken, because Moab is destroyed: there has gone up against you one to ravage your strong-hold.
18“You daughter who dwells in Dibon, come down from your glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Moab has come up against you. He has destroyed your strongholds.
19Stand by the way, and look, you that dwell in Arer; and ask him that is fleeing, and him that escapes, and say, What has happened?
19Inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way and watch. Ask him who flees, and her who escapes; say, ‘What has been done?’
20Moab is put to shame, because he is broken: howl and cry; proclaim in Arnon, that Moab has perished.
20Moab is disappointed; for it is broken down. Wail and cry! Tell it by the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.
21And judgment is coming against the land of Misor, upon Chelon, and Rephas, and Mophas,
21Judgment has come on the plain country— on Holon, on Jahzah, on Mephaath,
22and upon Daebon, and upon Nabau, and upon the house of Daethlathaim,
22on Dibon, on Nebo, on Beth Diblathaim,
23and upon Cariathaim, and upon the house of Gaemol, and upon the house of Maon,
23on Kiriathaim, on Beth Gamul, on Beth Meon,
24and upon Carioth, and upon Bosor, and upon all the cities of Moab, far and near.
24on Kerioth, on Bozrah, and on all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
25The horn of Moab is broken, and his arm is crushed.
25The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken,” says Yahweh.
26Make you⌃ him drunk; for he has magnified himself against the Lord: and Moab shall clap with his hand, and shall be also himself a laughing stock.
26“Make him drunk, for he magnified himself against Yahweh. Moab will wallow in his vomit, and he also will be in derision.
27For surely Israel was to you a laughing stock, and was found among your thefts, because you did fight against him.
27For wasn’t Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head.
28The inhabitants of Moab have left the cities, and lived in rocks; they have become as doves nestling in rocks, at the mouth of a cave.
28You inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock. Be like the dove that makes her nest over the mouth of the abyss.
29And I have heard of the pride of Moab, he has greatly heightened his pride and his haughtiness, and his heart has been lifted up.
29“We have heard of the pride of Moab. He is very proud in his loftiness, his pride, his arrogance, and the arrogance of his heart.
30But I know his works: is it not enough for him? has he not done thus?
30I know his wrath,” says Yahweh, “that it is nothing; his boastings have done nothing.
31Therefore howl you⌃ for Moab on all sides; cry out against the shorn men [in] a gloomy place. I will weep for you,
31Therefore I will wail for Moab. Yes, I will cry out for all Moab. They will mourn for the men of Kir Heres.
32O vine of Aserema, as with the weeping of Jazer: your branches are gone over the sea, they reached the cities of Jazer: destruction has come upon your fruits , [and] upon your grape gatherers.
32With more than the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah. Your branches passed over the sea. They reached even to the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your summer fruits and on your vintage.
33Joy and gladness have been utterly swept off the land of Moab: and [though] there was wine in your presses, in the morning they trod it not, neither in the evening did they raise the cry of joy.
33Gladness and joy is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab. I have caused wine to cease from the wine presses. No one will tread with shouting. The shouting will be no shouting.
34From the cry of Esebon even to Aetam their cities uttered their voice, from Zogor to Oronaim, and their tidings [as] a heifer of three years old, for the water also of Nebrin shall be dried up.
34From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, to Eglath Shelishiyah; for the waters of Nimrim will also become desolate.
35And I will destroy Moab, says the Lord, as he comes up to the altar, and burns incense to his gods.
35Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab,” says Yahweh, “him who offers in the high place, and him who burns incense to his gods.
36Therefore the heart of Moab shall sound as pipes, my heart shall sound as a pipe for the shorn men; forasmuch as what [every] man has gained has perished from him.
36Therefore my heart sounds for Moab like flutes, and my heart sounds like flutes for the men of Kir Heres. Therefore the abundance that he has gotten has perished.
37They shall all have their heads shaved in every place, and every beard shall be shaved; and all hands shall beat [the breasts], and on all loins shall be sackcloth .
37For every head is bald, and every beard clipped. There are cuttings on all the hands, and sackcloth on the waist.
38And on all the housetops of Moab, and in his streets [shall be mourning]: for I have broken [him], says the Lord, as a vessel, which is useless.
38On all the housetops of Moab, and in its streets, there is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like a vessel in which no one delights,” says Yahweh.
39How has he changed! how has Moab turned [his] back ! Moab is put to shame, and become a laughing stock, and an object of anger to all that are round about him.
39“How it is broken down! How they wail! How Moab has turned the back with shame! So will Moab become a derision and a terror to all who are around him.”
40For thus said the Lord;
40For Yahweh says: “Behold, he will fly as an eagle, and will spread out his wings against Moab.
41Carioth is taken, and the strongholds have been taken together.
41Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are seized. The heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day will be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
42And Moab shall perish from being a multitude, because he has magnified himself against the Lord.
42Moab will be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against Yahweh.
43A snare, and fear, and the pit, are upon you, O inhabitant of Moab.
43Terror, the pit, and the snare are on you, inhabitant of Moab,” says Yahweh.
44He that flees from the terror shall fall into the pit, and he that comes up out of the pit shall even be taken in the snare: for I will bring these things upon Moab in the year of their visitation.
44“He who flees from the terror will fall into the pit; and he who gets up out of the pit will be taken in the snare, for I will bring on him, even on Moab, the year of their visitation,” says Yahweh.
