1Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said,
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge?
2Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
3For what matters it to the Lord, if you were blameless in [your] works? or is it profitable that you should perfect your way?
3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4Will you maintain and plead your own cause? and will he enter into judgment with you?
4Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
5Is not your wickedness abundant, and your sins innumerable?
5Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
6And you have taken security of your brethren for nothing, and have taken away the clothing of the naked .
6For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7Neither have you given water to the thirsty to drink, but have taken away the morsel of the hungry.
7Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
8And you have accepted the persons of some; and you have established those [that were already settled] on the earth.
8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
9But you have sent widows away empty, and has afflicted orphans.

10Therefore snares have compassed you, and disastrous war has troubled you.
10Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
11The light has proved darkness to you, and water has covered you on your lying down.
11Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
12Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud?
12Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
13And you have said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark ?
13And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
14A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven.
14Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
15Will you [not] mark the old way, which righteous men have trodden?
15Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
16who were seized before their time: their foundations [are as] an overflowing stream.
16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
17Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us?
17Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
18Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel for the wicked is far from him.

19The righteous have seen [it], and laughed, and the blameless one has derided [them].
19The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
20Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their [property].
20Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
21Be firm, I pray you, if you can endure; then your fruit shall prosper.
21Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.
22Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23And if you shall turn and humble yourself before the Lord, you have [thus] removed unrighteousness far from your habitation.
23If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
24You shall lay up for yourself [treasure] in a heap on the rock; and Sophir [shall be] as the rock of the torrent.
24Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25So the Almighty shall be your helper from enemies, and he shall bring you forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire.
25Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
26Then shall you have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven.
26For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
27And he shall hear you when you pray to him, and he shall grant you [power] to pay your vows.
27Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
28And he shall establish to you again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon your paths.
28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29Because you have humbled yourself; and you shall say, [Man] has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes.
29When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
30He shall deliver the innocent, and do you save yourself by your pure hands.
30He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
