1For the end, a Song of David, to Idithun.
1O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I set a guard on my mouth, while the sinner stood in my presence.
2For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.
3I was dumb, and humbled myself, and kept silence from good [words]; and my grief was renewed.
3There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
4My heart grew hot within me, and a fire would kindle in my meditation: I spoke with my tongue,
4For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
5O Lord, make me to know mine end, and the number of my days, what it is; that I may know what I lack.
5My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.
6Behold, thou hast made my days old; and my existence [is] as nothing before thee: nay, every man living [is] altogether vanity. Pause.
6I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.
7Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain: he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them.
7For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8And now what [is] my expectation? [is it] not the Lord? and my ground [of hope] is with thee. Pause.
8I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
9Deliver me from all my transgressions: thou hast made me a reproach to the foolish.
9Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.
10I was dumb, and opened not my mouth; for thou art he that made me.
10My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
11Remove thy scourges from me: I have fainted by reason of the strength of thine hand.
11My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.
12Thou chastenest man with rebukes for iniquity, and thou makest his life to consume away like a spider's web: nay, every man is disquieted in vain. Pause.
12They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
13O Lord, hearken to my prayer and my supplication: attend to my tears: be not silent, for I am a sojourner in the land, and a stranger, as all my fathers [were].
13But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
14Spare me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart, and be no more.
14Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
