1For the end, [a Psalm] of instruction by David,
1Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
2when Doec the Idumean came and told Saul, and said to him, David is gone to the house of Abimelech.
2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3Why dost thou, O mighty man, boast of iniquity in [thy] mischief? All the day
3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
4thy tongue has devised unrighteousness; like a sharpened razor thou hast wrought deceit.
4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5Thou hast loved wickedness more than goodness; unrighteousness better than to speak righteousness. Pause.
5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
6Thou hast loved all words of destruction, [and] a deceitful tongue.
6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
7Therefore may God destroy thee for ever, may he pluck thee up and utterly remove thee from [thy] dwelling, and thy root from the land of the living. Pause.
7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8And the righteous shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him, and say,
8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9Behold the man who made not God his help; but trusted in the abundance of his wealth, and strengthened himself in his vanity.
9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10But I am as a fruitful olive in the house of God: I have trusted in the mercy of God for ever, even for evermore.
10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11I will give thanks to thee for ever, for thou hast done [it]: and I will wait on thy name; for [it is] good before thy saints.
11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
