1(79) A Psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathen are come into your inheritance; they have polluted your holy temple; they have made Jerusalem a storehouse of fruits.
1A contemplation by Asaph. Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
2They have given the dead bodies of your servants [to be] food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your holy ones for the wild beasts of the earth.
2I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old,
3They have shed their blood as water, round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury [them].
3which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
4We are become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to them [that are] round about us.
4We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.
5How long, O Lord? will you be angry for ever? shall your jealousy burn like fire?
5For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
6Pour out your wrath upon the heathen that have not known you, and upon the kingdoms which have not called upon your name.
6that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,
7For they have devoured Jacob, and laid his place waste.
7that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,
8Remember not our old transgressions; let your tender mercies speedily prevent us; for we are greatly impoverished.
8and might not be as their fathers— a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
9Help us, O God our Saviour; for the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us; and be merciful to our sins, for your name's sake.
9The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
10Lest haply they should say among the heathen, Where is their God? and let the avenging of your servant's blood that has been shed be known among the heathen before our eyes.
10They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.
11Let the groaning of the prisoners come in before you; according to the greatness of your arm preserve the sons of the slain ones.
11They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.
12Repay to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, with which they have reproached you, O Lord.
12He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13For we are your people and the sheep of your pasture; we will give you thanks for ever; we will declare your praise throughout all generations.
13He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.
