1(89) [A Psalm] of instruction for Aetham the Israelite. I will sing of your mercies, O Lord, for ever: I will declare your truth with my mouth to all generations.
1A Song. A Psalm by the sons of Korah. For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “The Suffering of Affliction.” A contemplation by Heman, the Ezrahite. Yahweh, the God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before you.
2For you have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: your truth shall be established in the heavens.
2Let my prayer enter into your presence. Turn your ear to my cry.
3I made a covenant with my chosen ones, I swore to David my servant.
3For my soul is full of troubles. My life draws near to Sheol.
4I will establish your seed for ever, and build up your throne to all generations. Pause.
4I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help,
5The heavens shall declare your wonders, O Lord; and your truth in the assembly of the saints.
5set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.
6For who in the heavens shall be compared to the Lord? and who shall be likened to the Lord among the sons of God?
6You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.
7God is glorified in the council of the saints; great and terrible toward all that are round about him.
7Your wrath lies heavily on me. You have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.
8O Lord God of hosts, who is like to you? you are mighty, O Lord, and your truth is round about you.
8You have taken my friends from me. You have made me an abomination to them. I am confined, and I can’t escape.
9You rule the power of the sea; and you calm the tumult of its waves.
9My eyes are dim from grief. I have called on you daily, Yahweh. I have spread out my hands to you.
10You have brought down the proud as one that is slain; and with the arm of your power you have scattered your enemies.
10Do you show wonders to the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and praise you? Selah.
11The heavens are your, and the earth is your: you have founded the world, and the fullness of it.
11Is your loving kindness declared in the grave? Or your faithfulness in Destruction?
12You have created the north and the west: Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name.
12Are your wonders made known in the dark? Or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13Your is the mighty arm: let your hand be strengthened, let your right hand be exalted.
13But to you, Yahweh, I have cried. In the morning, my prayer comes before you.
14Justice and judgment are the establishment of your throne: mercy and truth shall go before your face.
14Yahweh, why do you reject my soul? Why do you hide your face from me?
15Blessed is the people that knows the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance.
15I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.
16And in your name shall they rejoice all the day: and in your righteousness shall they be exalted.
16Your fierce wrath has gone over me. Your terrors have cut me off.
17For you are the boast of their strength; and in your good pleasure shall our horn be exalted,
17They came around me like water all day long. They completely engulfed me.
18for [our] help is of the Lord; and of the Holy One of Israel, our king.
18You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness.
