1And the children of Israel yet again committed iniquity before the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Phylistines forty years.
1And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
2And there was a man of Saraa, of the family of the kindred of Dan, and his name was Manoë, and his wife was barren, and bore not.
2And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.
3And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold , thou art barrenand hast not born; yet thou shalt conceivea son.
3And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.
4And now be very cautious, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing;
4Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:
5for behold, thou art with child, and shalt bring forth a son; and there shall come no razor upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Phylistines.
5For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
6And the woman went in, and spoke to her husband, saying, A man of God came to me, and his appearance [was as] of an angel of God, very dreadful; and I did not ask him whence he was, and he did not tell me his name.
6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
7And he said to me, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bring forth a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing; for the child shall be holy to God from the womb until the day of his death.
7But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.
8And Manoë prayed to the Lordand said, I pray thee, O Lord my Lord, [concerning] the man of God whom thou sentest; let him now come to us once more, and teach us what we shall do to the child about to be born.
8Then Manoah intreated the Lord, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
9And the Lord heard the voice of Manoë, and the angel of God came yet again to the woman; and she sat in the field, and Manoë her husband was not with her.
9And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.
10And the woman hasted, and ran, and brought word to her husband, and said to him, Beholdthe man who came in [the other] day to me has appeared to me.
10And the woman made haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.
11And Manoë aroseand followed his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, Art thou the man that spoke to the woman? and the angel said, I [am].
11And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.
12And Manoë said, Now shall [thy] word come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and our dealings with him?
12And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?
13And the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, Of all things concerning which I spoke to the woman, she shall beware.
13And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.
14She shall eat of nothing that comes of the vine yielding wine, and let her not drink wine or strong liquor, and let her not eat anything unclean : all things that I have charged her she shall observe.
14She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
15And Manoë said to the angel of the Lord, Let us detain thee here, and prepare before thee a kid of the goats.
15And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee.
16And the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, If thou shouldest detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wouldest offer a whole-burnt -offering, to the Lord thou shalt offer it: for Manoë knew not that he [was] an angel of the Lord.
16And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the Lord. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the Lord.
17And Manoë said to the angel of the Lord, What [is] thy name, that [when] thy word shall come to pass, we may glorify thee ?
17And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?
18And the angel of the Lord said to him, Why dost thou thus ask after my name; whereas it is wonderful?
18And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
19And Manoë took a kid of the goats and its meat -offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord; and [the angel] wrought a distinct work, and Manoë and his wife were looking on.
19So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the Lord: and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.
20And it came to passwhen the flame went up above the altar toward heaven , that the angel of the Lord went up in the flame; and Manoë and his wife were looking, and they fell upon their face to the earth.
20For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
21And the angel appeared no more to Manoë and to his wife: then Manoë knew that this [was] an angel of the Lord.
21But the angel of the Lord did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the Lord.
22And Manoë said to his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.
22And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.
23But his wife said to him, If the Lord were pleased to slay us, he would not have received of our hand a whole-burnt -offering and a meat -offering; and he would not have shewn us all these things, neither would he have caused us to hear all these thingsas at this time .
23But his wife said unto him, If the Lord were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
24And the woman brought forth a son, and she called his name Sampson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.
24And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.
25And the Spirit of the Lord began to go out with him in the camp of Dan, and between Saraa and Esthaol.

1And Sampson went down to Thamnatha, and saw a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Philistines.

2And he went upand told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Phylistines; and now take her to me for a wife.

3And his father and his mother said to him, Are there no daughters of thy brethren, and [is there not] a woman of all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Sampson said to his father, Take her for me, for she [is] right in my eyes.
3Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
4And his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought to be revenged on the Philistines: and at that time the Philistines lorded it over Israel.

5And Sampson and his father and his mother went down to Thamnatha, and he came to the vineyard of Thamnatha; andbehold, a young lion roared in meeting him.

6And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he crushed him as he would have crushed a kid of the goats, and there was nothing in his hands: and he told not his father and his mother what he had done.
6And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
7And they went downand spoke to the woman, and she was pleasing in the eyes of Sampson.

8And after some time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion; andbehold, a swarm of bees, and honey [were] in the mouth of the lion.

9And he took it into his hands, and went on eating, and he went to his father and his mother, and gave to them, and they did eat; but he told them not that he took the honey out of the mouth of the lion.

10And his father went down to the woman, and Sampson made there a banquet for seven days, for so the young men are used to do.

11And it came to passwhen they saw him, that they took thirty guests, and they were with him.

12And Sampson said to them, I propound you a riddle : if ye will indeed tell it me, and discover it within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of raiment.
12And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
13And if ye cannot tell it me, ye shall give me thirty napkins and thirty changes of apparel: and they said to him, Propound thy riddle, and we will hear it.
13But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.
14And he said to them, Meat came forth of the eater , and sweetness out of the strong: and they could not tell the riddle for three days .
14And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
15And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they said to the wife of Sampson, Deceive now thy husband, and let him tell thee the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: did ye invite us to do us violence?
15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
16And Sampson's wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not; for the riddle which thou hast propounded to the children of my people, thou hast not told me: and Sampson said to her, If I have not told it to my father and my mother, shall I tell it to thee?
16And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
17And she wept before him the seven days, during which their banquet lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she troubled him; and she told it to the children of her people.

18And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day, before sunrise, What [is] sweeter than honey? and what [is] stronger than a lion? and Sampson said to them, If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, ye would not have known my riddle.
18And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully, and he went down to Ascalon, and destroyed of the inhabitants thirty men , and took their garments, and gave the changes of raiment to them that told the riddle; and Sampson was very angry, and went up to the house of his father.
19And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
20And the wife of Sampson was [given] to one of his friends, with whom he was on terms of friendship.
20But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
