1And Job further continued and said in his parable,
1Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
2[As] God lives, who has thus judged me; and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul;
2As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;
3verily, while my breath is yet in [me], and the breath of God which remains to me is in my nostrils,
3All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
4my lips shall not speak evil words, neither shall my soul meditate unrighteous thoughts.
4My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.
5Far be it from me that I should justify youtill I die; for I will not let go my innocence,
5God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
6but keeping fast to [my] righteousness I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done any thing amiss.
6My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
7Nay rather, but let mine enemies be as the overthrow of the ungodly, and they that rise up against me, as the destruction of transgressors.
7Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
8For what is the hope of the ungodly, that he holds to it? will he indeed trust in the Lord [and] be saved?
8For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
9Will God hear his prayer? or, when distress has come upon him,
9Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
10has he any confidence before him? or will [God] hear him as he calls upon him?
10Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
11Yet now I will tell you what is in the hand of the Lord: I will not lie concerning the things which are with the Almighty .
11I will teach you by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.
12Behold, ye all know that ye are adding vanity to vanity.
12Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; why then are ye thus altogether vain?
13This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of oppressorsshall come upon them from the Almighty.
13This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.
14And if their children be many, they shall be for slaughter: and if they grow up, they shall beg.
14If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
15And they that survive of him shall utterly perish, and no one shall pity their widows .
15Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.
16Even if he should gather silver as earth, and prepare gold as clay;
16Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;
17all these things shall the righteous gain, and the truehearted shall possess his wealth.
17He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
18And his house is gone like moths, and like a spider's web.
18He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh.
19The rich man shall lie down, and shall not continue: he has opened his eyes, and he is not.
19The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.
20Pains have come upon him as water, and darkness has carried him away by night.
20Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.
21And a burning wind shall catch him , and he shall depart, and it shall utterly drive him out of his place.
21The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.
22And [God] shall cast [trouble] upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
22For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
23He shall cause [men] to clap their hands against them, and shall hiss him out of his place.
23Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.
1For there is a place for the silver, whence it comes, and a place for the gold, whence it is refined.
1Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
2For iron comes out of the earth, and brass is hewn out like stone.
2Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
3He has set a bound to darkness, and he searches out every limit: a stone [is] darkness, and the shadow of death.
3He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
4There is a cutting off of the torrent by reason of dust: so they that forget the right way are weakened; they are removed from [among] men.
4The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
5[As for] the earth, out of it shall come bread: under it has been turned up as it were fire.
5As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
6Her stones are the place of the sapphire: and [her] dust [supplies] man with gold.
6The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold.
7[There is] a path, the fowl has not known it, neither has the eye of the vultureseen it:
7There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture’s eye hath not seen:
8neither have the sons of the proud trodden it, a lion has not passed upon it.
8The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
9He has stretched forth his hand on the sharp [rock], and turned up mountains by the roots:
9He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.
10and he has interrupted the whirlpools of rivers, and mine eye has seen every precious thing.
10He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
11And he has laid bare the depths of rivers, and has brought his power to light.
11He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.
12But whence has wisdom been discovered? and what is the place of knowledge?
12But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
13A mortal has not known its way, neither indeed has it been discovered among men.
13Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
14The depth said, It is not in me: and the sea said, It is not with me.
14The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
15One shall not give fine gold instead of it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it.
15It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
16Neither shall it be compared with gold of Sophir, with the precious onyx and sapphire.
16It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17Gold and crystal shall not be equalled to it, neither shall vessels of gold be its exchange.
17The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
18Coral and fine pearl shall not be mentioned: but do thou esteem wisdom above the most precious things.
18No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equalled to it; it shall not be compared with pure gold.
19The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20Whence then is wisdom found? and of what kind is the place of understanding?
20Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21It has escaped the notice of every man, and has been hidden from the birds of the sky.
21Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22Destruction and Death said, We have heard the report of it.
22Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23God has well ordered the way of it, and he knows the place of it.
23God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24For he surveys the whole [earth] under heaven, knowing the things in the earth:
24For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25all that he has made; the weight of the winds, the measures of the water.
25To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26When he made [them], thus he saw and numbered them, and made a way for the pealing of the thunder.
26When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27Then he saw it, and declared it: he prepared it [and] traced it out.
27Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28And he said to man, Behold, godliness is wisdom; and to abstain from evil is understanding.
28And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
