Hebrews 1 — The Son Is God Hebrews 1:1-14 (King James Version) Written to first-century Hebrew Christians being tempted back to the temple rites and Mosaic ceremony, the Epistle to the Hebrews opens with the Holy Spirit's hammer-blow declaration: the Son is God. He is the brightness of the Father's glory, the express image of His person, the creator of the worlds, enthroned at the right hand of the Majesty on high, worshipped by every angel of heaven. There is no path to salvation except through Him. The temple is finished. Jerusalem will fall, exactly as Jesus foretold. The altar is gone. The Son remains. This is a warning chapter. It was written to the doubting then. Not merely a prophet. Not merely a teacher. The Son is called God by name in verse 8: "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever." The Son is the creator (v2, v10). The Son is worshipped by angels (v6). The Son sits at the right hand of the Father (v3). There is no other way home. The original audience were Hebrew Christians drifting back toward temple sacrifice. The writer pulls them up short: every prophet, every angel, every ceremony pointed to the One who has now spoken in person. Going back is not nostalgia — it is rejection. Within a generation of this letter, the temple they were considering returning to was utterly destroyed by the Roman legions of Titus in AD 70, exactly as Jesus prophesied. Not one stone left upon another. The doubters of the first century needed this reminder.
