Hebrews 2 — The Son Became Man Hebrews 2:1-18 (King James Version) The God who made the galaxies knelt in the dirt beside you. Hebrews 2 follows the hammer-blow declaration of chapter 1 with the most stunning reversal in Scripture: the Son who was enthroned above every angel chose to descend. He was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death. He took on flesh and blood. He destroyed the devil through death itself. He delivered those who were all their lifetime subject to bondage through fear of death. And he is not ashamed to call us brethren. This is not a distant God. This is the captain of salvation, perfected through sufferings, who kneels beside the struggling and says: I know. I have been there. Hebrews 2 proves God became man. Not symbolically. Not in appearance. He took on flesh and blood. He was made like his brethren in all things. He suffered. He was tempted. He tasted death for every man. And through that death he destroyed the one who held the power of death. The original audience were Hebrew Christians drifting back toward the temple. The writer warns them: if the word spoken by angels was binding, how shall you escape if you neglect a salvation spoken by the Son himself? There is no safe drift. There is no neutral ground.
