Hebrews 4 -- The Rest That Remains Hebrews 4:1-16 (King James Version) The rest they died trying to earn is still open. You enter it by faith. And the High Priest at the throne already knows every weakness you carry. Hebrews 4 picks up where chapter 3 left off: the bones of the wilderness generation are in the sand, but the promise of rest still stands. It was not fulfilled by Joshua. It was not fulfilled by the Sabbath. There remains a rest for the people of God, and it is entered by faith, not by works. Then the chapter pivots: the Word of God is alive, sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. Nothing is hidden from His eyes. And the chapter closes at the throne of grace, where the Great High Priest who was tempted in every way invites the believer to come boldly. It is not Canaan. It is not the Sabbath. Joshua led Israel across the Jordan and into the Promised Land, but if that were the rest, God would not have spoken of another day centuries later through David. The rest is entered by faith, and the one who enters it ceases from his own works, as God ceased from His. Then the chapter breaks open: the Word of God is not a dead letter. It is alive. It is a sword that cuts between soul and spirit, between joints and marrow. It discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart. Nothing is hidden. You are fully exposed before Him. But the chapter does not end in exposure. It ends in grace. The Great High Priest who passed through the heavens was tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin. He does not stand distant. He understands. Come boldly. Not timidly. Not ashamed. Boldly.
