Hebrews 6 -- The Danger of Falling Away
Hebrews 6:1-20 (King James Version)
You cannot stand still. There is a falling away from which there is no road back, and there is an anchor that holds within the veil. Hebrews 6 holds both in the same hand.
The writer urges believers to leave the elementary foundation, repentance, faith, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection, and judgment, and to go on unto perfection. Then comes the gravest warning in the epistle: those once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Ghost, cannot be renewed again to repentance if they fall away, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. The ground that bears thorns and briers, not herbs, is rejected, nigh unto cursing, and burned.
Then the writer turns to comfort. He is persuaded better things of you. He points to Abraham, to whom God, because he could swear by no greater, sware by himself. By two immutable things, the promise and the oath, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we have a strong consolation: a hope that is an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, entering into that within the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

WHY THIS CHAPTER MATTERS
Hebrews 6 is far more sobering read whole than in fragments. The warning is real: a deliberate turning from light once received, that crucifies the Son of God afresh. The writer compares it to ground that drank the rain and still brought forth only thorns, whose end is to be burned.
But the warning was never meant to stand alone. The same writer is persuaded of better things of his readers, and grounds their assurance not in their own strength but in the character of God, who cannot lie and bound himself by an oath to Abraham. On that rests a hope that is an anchor of the soul, reaching past the veil into the holy place where Jesus has entered as our forerunner and high priest. A warning and an anchor in the same breath.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL
Sovereign Logos is the only Bible reading platform that uses the Septuagint as its Old Testament base text -- the same Greek translation the apostles quoted, written two centuries before Christ. Every modern English Bible (ESV, NIV, NASB) translates the OT from the Masoretic Text, a Hebrew tradition finalized centuries after the New Testament. The differences are not trivial. We show you exactly where.
Read the Bible the way the early Church read it.
