Open your Bible to the end of the Book of Esther. Chapter ten ends after three short verses. A note about tribute. A footnote to the chronicles. A closing line about Mordecai. The book just stops. The dream Mordecai had in chapter one is never explained. Never interpreted. Never resolved. Between the seventh and tenth centuries, the Masoretes - Jewish scribes working in Tiberias seven hundred years after Christ - produced the standard Hebrew text most modern Bibles translate from. They cut the entire interpretation of the dream that opened the book. The Septuagint preserved every word. In the deleted ending Mordecai himself tells you what the dream meant. The small fountain that became a river is Esther. The two serpents are Mordecai and Aman. The nations are those who combined to destroy the name of the Jews. The lots that came for an appointed season and a day of judgment, before God, for all the nations. The institution of the feast in the month Adar. The colophon dating the letter to the fourth year of the reign of Ptolemaeus and Cleopatra, signed by Dositheus the priest and Levite, brought from Jerusalem, interpreted by Lysimachus. All of it deleted from the standard text. The Septuagint preserved every line. Why were the Jews spared in Esther? Not for their blood. Because they turned back to God. Mordecai and Esther fasted in sackcloth, the whole people cried out in repentance, and God answered. That is the pattern of the whole Bible. God chooses, and God saves, on His terms, never by lineage. He turned the heart of a pagan king from wrath to mercy. When Jonah was three days in the belly of the fish - the sign of the death and resurrection of Christ - God sent him to Gentile Nineveh, and Nineveh repented and was spared. Israel was chosen for one purpose: to be preserved, through every plot to destroy it, until the Messiah came. The line of David had to continue to its appointed hour. Esther is one link in that chain. And when the Messiah came, the chosen people became those who are His. The new Israel is not a bloodline. It is the followers of Christ, drawn from every nation, the children of Abraham by faith. If the Masoretes cut this much from a single book - the opening dream, the prayers where God is named, Esthers collapse before the king, two royal decrees, and now the meaning of the entire story - then you have to ask: what was their motive? And what else did they cut? The Almighty keeps His promises, and He preserved His word. Every passage they deleted from Esther was kept whole in the Septuagint, the Scriptures the apostles themselves read.
