The Deleted Prayer That Names God in Esther
@sovereignlogos·May 1, 2026
The Book of Esther in your Bible never names God. Not once across ten chapters. That was not the original.
Between the seventh and tenth centuries, the Masoretes — Jewish scribes working in Tiberias seven hundred years after Christ — produced the standard Hebrew text most modern Bibles translate from. They cut from the Book of Esther every passage where the Almighty is named. The largest single deletion is in chapter four, verse seventeen: 4,209 characters where Mordecai prays, where Esther prays, where the Almighty is named twenty-four times across two prayers.
The Septuagint preserved all of it. The Greek Old Testament Jesus and the apostles read. We just read the deleted prayer aloud, in full.
Part 2 of "Esther Restored" — a seven-part series reading the full Book of Esther with every deleted verse put back. Zero verses skipped.

WHAT YOU WILL HEAR
• The full text of Mordecai's deleted prayer, restored from the Septuagint. The covenant invoked. The God of Abraham named. The glory of God refused to be given to a man.
• The full text of Esther's deleted prayer, restored from the Septuagint. The crown rejected. The royal banquet refused. The Almighty named as her only helper. The plea that God turn the king's heart.
• Why this passage was cut. Strip the prayers and you strip the theology. The Esther in your Bible can be read as a story of human cleverness and political maneuvering. The Septuagint Esther is a story of a queen on her face in sackcloth, calling herself destitute, begging the Almighty to act because she knows that without Him she will die.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL
Sovereign Logos publishes the Septuagint — the Greek Old Testament quoted by Jesus, the apostles, and the early church fathers — as the unadulterated Scripture. We publish the deuterocanonical books (Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, Maccabees, and more) alongside the standard Protestant canon, and we publish the broader pseudepigraphal writings the apostles cited (like 1 Enoch) so that readers can engage every text the New Testament writers engaged with. Daily Bible readings, cross-references to every verse, the full Webster's 1828 dictionary for every biblical term, and a growing body of long-form flagship videos on textual history are all free at sovereignlogos.com.
Christ is King.
