The Deleted Scene Where Esther Collapsed Before The King
@sovereignlogos·May 3, 2026
Open your Bible to Esther chapter 5. Read the first two verses. That is the entire scene where Queen Esther approached King Ahasuerus to risk her life for her people.
Two verses. The Septuagint preserves sixteen.
Between the seventh and tenth centuries, the Masoretes - Jewish scribes working in Tiberias seven hundred years after Christ - produced the standard Hebrew text most modern Bibles translate from. They cut the entire dramatic encounter where Esther arrives in royal apparel supported by two maids, where her body fails her and she collapses in the throne room, where the angel of the Lord enters and changes the spirit of the king from anger to gentleness, and where the king springs from his throne to comfort her. Fourteen verses. All of it cut.
Most historical Christian theologians from Justin Martyr and Irenaeus through Augustine, Luther, and Calvin identified the angel of the Lord in Old Testament theophanies as the pre-incarnate Christ. Read the deleted text and the conclusion is unmissable: Jesus stood in the throne room of Persia and saved his people through a queen who could not stand on her own.
Part 3 of "Esther Restored" - a seven-part series reading the full Book of Esther with every deleted verse put back. Zero verses skipped.

WHAT YOU WILL HEAR
• The full text of LXX Esther 5:1-2 dramatized: Esther's procession with her two maids, her face blooming in beauty but her heart straitened with fear, her collapse before the throne, the angel changing the king's spirit, the king springing from his throne to take her in his arms, the golden sceptre laid upon her neck.
• The theological reveal: who the angel of the Lord was. The classical Christian reading from the church fathers and Reformers. The same face that walked into the Persian throne room is the same face that taught on a Galilean hillside and was crucified outside Jerusalem.
• The visual contrast: Two Esthers. The Masoretic Esther approaches the king on her own courage. The Septuagint Esther is carried by maids and saved by the unseen Christ. Strip the angel and you strip the gospel from the story.

Sovereign Logos publishes the Septuagint - the Greek Old Testament quoted by Jesus, the apostles, and the early church fathers - as the unadulterated Scripture. We publish the deuterocanonical books (Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, Maccabees, and more) alongside the standard Protestant canon, and we publish the broader pseudepigraphal writings the apostles cited (like 1 Enoch) so that readers can engage every text the New Testament writers engaged with. Daily Bible readings, cross-references to every verse, the full Webster's 1828 dictionary for every biblical term, and a growing body of long-form flagship videos on textual history are all free at sovereignlogos.com.
