Open your Bible to Esther chapter 8 verse 13. Read it. That is the entire reversal decree where the king cancelled the genocide Haman ordered against the Jews of Persia. One sentence. The Septuagint preserves the entire imperial counter-letter in the kings own voice. Between the seventh and tenth centuries, the Masoretes - Jewish scribes working in Tiberias seven hundred years after Christ - produced the standard Hebrew text most modern Bibles translate from. They cut the entire imperial letter Artaxerxes dictated to recant his complicity in Hamans plot. Four thousand two hundred and thirty-eight characters - the longest single deletion in the Book of Esther. The salutation to the hundred and twenty-seven satrapies. The opening lament for sovereigns deceived by counselors. The sin-hating vengeance of the ever-seeing God. The naming of Aman the Macedonian as a traitor to the throne. The reversal that authorizes the Jews to defend themselves on the thirteenth of Adar. The institution of the feast. All of it deleted from the standard text. The Septuagint preserved every paragraph. The Septuagint has the king himself call the Israelites the sons of the living God and the chosen race. Hear those words rightly. The Israelites were not a special people. They were a people through whom God chose to bring Messiah into the world. The promise to Abraham named one Seed, not many. Paul says it plainly in Galatians chapter three verse sixteen. The Seed is Christ. Christ alone is the Seed of Abraham. Believers in Him become Abrahams children by faith, not by blood. Christ himself said God could raise sons of Abraham from the stones. The chosen-ness was the purpose, not the people. Most historical theologians read this passage as the redeemed pagan king prefiguring every soul Christ would later turn. The same hand that sealed the genocide signed the letter that cancelled it. Mordecai walks out of the palace in royal apparel, robed in violet and white, wearing a golden crown of fine linen - the man who would not bow walking through the gates a free man.
