1And the devil stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
1Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
2And king David said to Joab and to the captains of the forces, Go, number Israel from Bersabee even to Dan, and bring me [the account], and I shall know their number.
2David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
3And Joab said, May the Lord add to his people, a hundred-fold as many as they [are], and [let] the eyes of my lord the king see [it]: all [are] the servants of my lord. Why does my lord seek this thing? [do it not], lest it become a sin to Israel.
3Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
4Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab; and Joab went out and passed through all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
4Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.
5And Joab gave the number of the mustering of the people to David: and all Israel was a million and a hundred thousand men that drew sword: and the sons of Juda [were] four hundred and seventy thousand men that drew sword.
5Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
6But he numbered not Levi and Benjamin among them; for the word of the kingwas painful to Joab.
6But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7And [there was] evil in the sight of the Lord respecting this thing; and he smote Israel.
7God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
8And David said to God, I have sinned exceedingly, in that I have done this thing: and now , I pray thee, remove the sin of thy servant; for I have been exceedingly foolish.
8David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
9And the Lord spoke to Gad the seer, saying,
9Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10Go and speak to David, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I bring three things upon thee: choose one of them for thyself, and I will do it to thee.
10“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
11And Gad came to David, and said to him, Thus saith the Lord, Choose for thyself,
11So Gad came to David and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:
12either three years of famine, or that thou shouldest flee three months from the face of thine enemies, and the sword of thine enemies [shall be employed] to destroy thee, or that the sword of the Lord and pestilence [should be] three days in the land, and the angel of the Lord [shall be] destroying in all the inheritance of Israel. And now consider what I shall answer to him that sent the message.
12either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”
13And David said to Gad, They are very hard for me, even [all] the three: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies [are] very abundant, and let me not fall by any means into the hands of man.
13David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
14So the Lord brought pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men .
14So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
15And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord saw, and repented for the evil, and said to the angel that was destroying , Let it suffice thee; withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshing -floor of Orna the Jebusite.
15God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the Lord, standing between the earth and the heaven, and his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem: and David and the eldersclothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
16David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
17And David said to God, [Was it] not I [that] gave orders to number the people ? and I am the guilty one; I have greatly sinned: but these sheep, what have they done? O Lord God, let thy hand be upon me, and upon my father's house, and not on thy people for destruction, O Lord!
17David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
18And the angel of the Lord told Gad to tell David, that he should go up to erect an altar to the Lord, in the threshing -floor of Orna the Jebusite.
18Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19And David went up according to the word of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the Lord.
19David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.
20And Orna turned and saw the king; and he hid himself and his four sons with him . Now Orna was threshing wheat.
20Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21And David came to Orna; and Orna came forth from the threshing -floor, and did obeisance to David with his face to the ground.
21As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22And David said to Orna, Give me thy place of the threshing -floor, and I will build upon it an altar to the Lord: give itme for its worth in money, and the plague shall cease from [among] the people.
22Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
23And Orna said to David, Take it to thyself, and let my lord the king do what is right in his eyes: see, I have given the calves for a whole-burnt-offering, and the plough for wood, and the corn for a meat-offering; I have given all.
23Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
24And king David said to Orna, Nay; for I will surely buy it for its worth in money: for I will not take thy property for the Lord, to offer a whole-burnt -offering to the Lord without cost [to myself].
24King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25And David gave to Orna for his place six hundred shekels of gold [by] weight .
25So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
26And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole-burnt -offerings and peace -offerings: and he cried to the Lord, and he answered him by fire out of heaven on the altar of whole-burnt -offerings, and [it] consumed the whole-burnt-offering.
26David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
27And the Lord spoke to the angel; and he put up the sword into its sheath.
27Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28At that timewhen David saw that the Lord answered him in the threshing -floor of Orna the Jebusite, he also sacrificed there.
28At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29And the tabernacle of the Lord which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of whole-burnt-offerings, [were] at that time in the high place at Gabaon.
29For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30And David could not go before it to enquire of God; for he hasted not because of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
30But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.
1And David said, This is the house of the Lord God, and this [is] the altar for whole-burnt -offering for Israel.
1Then David said, “This is the house of Yahweh God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”
2And David gave orders to gather all the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he appointed stone-hewers to hew polished stones to build the house to God.
2David gave orders to gather together the foreigners who were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to cut dressed stones to build God’s house.
3And David prepared much iron for the nails of the doors and the gates; the hinges also and brass in abundance , there was no weighing [of it].
3David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates and for the couplings, and bronze in abundance without weight,
4And cedar trees without number: for the Sidonians and the Tyrians brought cedar trees in abundance to David.

5And David said, My son Solomon [is] a tender child, and the house [for me] to build to the Lord [is] for superior magnificence for a name and for a glory through all the earth: I will make preparation for it. And David prepared abundantly before his death.
5David said, “Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for Yahweh must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries. I will therefore make preparation for it.” So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6And he called Solomon his son, and commanded him to build the house for the Lord God of Israel.
6Then he called for Solomon his son, and commanded him to build a house for Yahweh, the God of Israel.
7And David said to Solomon , [My] child, it was in my heart to build a house to the name of the Lord God.
7David said to Solomon his son, “As for me, it was in my heart to build a house to the name of Yahweh my God.
8But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast carried on great wars: thou shalt not build a house to my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth before me.
8But Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, ‘You have shed blood abundantly and have made great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight.
9Behold, a son shall be born to thee, he shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name [shall be] Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.
9Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of peace. I will give him rest from all his enemies all around; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.
10He shall build a house to my name; and he shall be a son to me, and I will be a father to him; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom in Israel for ever.
10He shall build a house for my name; and he will be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’
11And now, my son, the Lord shall be with thee, and prosper [thee]; and thou shalt build a house to the Lord thy God, as he spoke concerning thee.
11Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you and prosper you, and build the house of Yahweh your God, as he has spoken concerning you.
12Only may the Lord give thee wisdom and prudence, and strengthen thee over Israel, both to keep and to do the law of the Lord thy God.
12May Yahweh give you discretion and understanding, and put you in charge of Israel, so that you may keep the law of Yahweh your God.
13Then will he prosper [thee], if thou take heed to do the commandments and judgments which the Lord commanded Moses for Israel: be courageousand strong; fear not, nor be terrified.
13Then you will prosper, if you observe to do the statutes and the ordinances which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid and don’t be dismayed.
14And, behold, I according to my poverty have prepared for the house of the Lord a hundred thousand talents of gold, and a million talents of silver, and brass and iron without measure; for it is abundant; and I have prepared timber and stones; and do thou add to these.
14Now, behold, in my affliction I have prepared for Yahweh’s house one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver, and bronze and iron without weight; for it is in abundance. I have also prepared timber and stone; and you may add to them.
15And [of them that are] with thee do thou add to the multitude of workmen; [let there be] artificers and masons, and carpenters, and every skilful [workman] in every work;
15There are also workmen with you in abundance—cutters and workers of stone and timber, and all kinds of men who are skillful in every kind of work;
16in gold and silver, brass and iron, [of which] there is no number. Arise and do, and the Lord [be] with thee.
16of the gold, the silver, the bronze, and the iron, there is no number. Arise and be doing, and may Yahweh be with you.”
17And David charged all the chief men of Israel to help Solomon his son, [saying],
17David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,
18[Is] not the Lord with you? and he has given you rest round about, for he has given into your hands the inhabitants of the land ; and the land is subdued before the Lord, and before his people.
18“Isn’t Yahweh your God with you? Hasn’t he given you rest on every side? For he has delivered the inhabitants of the land into my hand; and the land is subdued before Yahweh and before his people.
19Now set your hearts and souls to seek after the Lord your God: and rise, and build a sanctuary to your Godto carry in the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the Lord.
19Now set your heart and your soul to follow Yahweh your God. Arise therefore, and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, to bring the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for Yahweh’s name.”
