1Howbeit hear, Job, my words, and hearken to my speech.
1“However, Job, please hear my speech, and listen to all my words.
2For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken .
2See now, I have opened my mouth. My tongue has spoken in my mouth.
3My heart [shall be found] pure by [my] words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity.
3My words will utter the uprightness of my heart. That which my lips know they will speak sincerely.
4The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me .
4The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5If thou canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I [will stand] against thee.
5If you can, answer me. Set your words in order before me, and stand up.
6Thou art formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same [substance].
6Behold, I am toward God even as you are. I am also formed out of the clay.
7My fear shall not terrify thee, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
7Behold, my terror will not make you afraid, neither will my pressure be heavy on you.
8But thou hast said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of thy words;) because thou sayest, I am pure, not having sinned;
8“Surely you have spoken in my hearing, I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
9I am blameless, for I have not transgressed.
9I am clean, without disobedience. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
10Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary.
10Behold, he finds occasions against me. He counts me for his enemy.
11And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways.
11He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.
12For how sayest thou, I am righteous, yet he has not hearkened to me? for he that is above mortals is eternal.
12“Behold, I will answer you. In this you are not just, for God is greater than man.
13But thou sayest, Why has he not heard every word of my cause?
13Why do you strive against him, because he doesn’t give account of any of his matters?
14For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time,
14For God speaks once, yes twice, though man pays no attention.
15[sending] a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)
15In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, in slumbering on the bed,
16then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions:
16then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,
17to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall.
17that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
18He spares also his soul from death, and [suffers] him not to fall in war.
18He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
19And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.
19“He is chastened also with pain on his bed, with continual strife in his bones,
20And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat;
20so that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty food.
21until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall shew his bones bare.
21His flesh is so consumed away that it can’t be seen. His bones that were not seen stick out.
22His soul also draws nigh to death, and his life is in Hades.
22Yes, his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.
23Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;
23“If there is beside him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man what is right for him,
24he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as [fresh] plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with marrow.
24then God is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.
25And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in [his] full strength.
25His flesh will be fresher than a child’s. He returns to the days of his youth.
26And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression [of praise]: for he will render to men [their] due.
26He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness.
27Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.
27He sings before men, and says, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it didn’t profit me.
28Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.
28He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life will see the light.
29Behold, all these things the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.
29Behold, God does all these things, twice, yes three times, with a man,
30And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light .
30to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.
31Hearken, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak.
31Mark well, Job, and listen to me. Hold your peace, and I will speak.
32If thou hast words, answer me: speak, for I desire thee to be justified.
32If you have anything to say, answer me. Speak, for I desire to justify you.
33If not, do thou hear me: be silent, and I will teach thee.
33If not, listen to me. Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.
1And Elius continued, and said,
1Moreover Elihu answered,
2Hear me, ye wise men; hearken, ye that have knowledge.
2Hear my words, you wise men. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge.
3For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat.
3For the ear tries words, as the palate tastes food.
4Let us choose judgment to ourselves: let us know among ourselves what is right.
4Let us choose for us that which is right. Let us know among ourselves what is good.
5For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment.
5For Job has said, I am righteous, God has taken away my right.
6And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness [of mine].
6Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.
7What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?
7What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water,
8[saying], I have not sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.
8who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men?
9For thou shouldest not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas [there is] a visitation on him from the Lord.
9For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
10Wherefore hear me, ye that are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the Almighty.
10“Therefore listen to me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness, from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
11Yea, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man's path he will find him.
11For the work of a man he will give to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12And thinkest thou that the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment?
12Yes surely, God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.
13And who is he that made [the whole world] under heaven, and all things therein?
13Who put him in charge of the earth? Or who has appointed him over the whole world?
14For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;
14If he set his heart on himself, if he gathered to himself his spirit and his breath,
15all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, whence also he was formed.
15all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.
16Take heed lest he rebuke [thee]: hear this, hearken to the voice of words.
16“If now you have understanding, hear this. Listen to the voice of my words.
17Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just.
17Should even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty,
18[He is] ungodly that says to a king, Thou art a transgressor, [that says] to princes, O most ungodly one.
18who says to a king, ‘Vile!’ or to nobles, ‘Wicked!’?
19[Such a one] as would not reverence the face of an honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.
19He doesn’t respect the persons of princes, nor respect the rich more than the poor, for they all are the work of his hands.
20But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside [from their right].
20In a moment they die, even at midnight. The people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are taken away without a hand.
21For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.
21For his eyes are on the ways of a man. He sees all his goings.
22Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.
22There is no darkness, nor thick gloom, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23For he will not lay upon a man more [than right].
23For he doesn’t need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment.
24For the Lord looks down upon all men , who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.
24He breaks mighty men in pieces in ways past finding out, and sets others in their place.
25Who discovers their works, and will bring night about [upon them], and they shall be brought low.
25Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26And he quite destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.
26He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
27Because they turned aside from the law of God, and did not regard his ordinances,
27because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,
28so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.
28so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted.
29And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? and he will hide his face, and who shall see him? whether [it be done] against a nation, or against a man also:
29When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? He is over a nation or a man alike,
30causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.
30that the godless man may not reign, that there be no one to ensnare the people.
31For [there is] one that says to the Mighty One, I have received [blessings]; I will not take a pledge:
31For has any said to God, I am guilty, but I will not offend any more.
32I will see apart from myself: do thou shew me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do [so] any more.
32Teach me that which I don’t see. If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?
33Will he take vengeance for it on thee, whereas thou wilt put [it] far [from thee]? for thou shalt choose, and not I; and what thou knowest, speak thou.
33Shall his recompense be as you desire, that you refuse it? For you must choose, and not I. Therefore speak what you know.
34Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.
34Men of understanding will tell me, yes, every wise man who hears me:
35But Job has not spoken with understanding, his words are not [uttered] with knowledge.
35Job speaks without knowledge. His words are without wisdom.
36Howbeit do thou learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish:
36I wish that Job were tried to the end, because of his answering like wicked men.
37that we add not to our sins: for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if [we] speak many words before the Lord.
37For he adds rebellion to his sin. He claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.
