The most religious man in the country came to Jesus at night. A Pharisee. A ruler. A master of Israel. And Jesus told him he could not even see the kingdom of God unless he was born again. Look at the word the Lord chose. Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown stop right on it: a man, not a Jew merely, the necessity is a universal one. The new birth is not a national privilege you inherit by blood. There are not two peoples of God on two tracks. There is one door, born from above, and the master of Israel had to walk through it like everyone else.
