Matthew 4 presents the narrative of Jesus being led by the Spirit into the wilderness to face temptation by the devil. The passage highlights Jesus' fasting for forty days and nights, after which he experiences hunger. The tempter challenges Jesus, suggesting that he turn stones into bread, but Jesus responds by stating, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.' This chapter also includes the devil taking Jesus to the holy city and urging him to cast himself down, quoting Scripture. Jesus rebuffs, saying, 'Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.' Furthermore, the devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world from an exceeding high mountain, promising them in exchange for worship. Jesus' firm reply, 'Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve,' leads to the devil's departure, after which angels minister to Jesus. The chapter continues with Jesus moving to Capernaum upon hearing of John's imprisonment and fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah, as well as beginning his ministry by proclaiming, 'Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Key events: temptation of Jesus, angels ministering, Jesus' move to Capernaum, start of preaching. → Matthew 4:1-23. Read the whole Bible, Septuagint and KJV side by side, at sovereignlogos.com.
