Matthew 9 (KJV) Read Aloud | Daily Bible Reading

In Matthew 9, Jesus performs miracles and addresses controversies that arise around his actions and teachings. The chapter opens with Jesus entering a ship, crossing over, and coming into his own city. Here, people bring to him a man sick of the palsy. Demonstrating faith, Jesus tells the man, 'Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.' This prompts accusations of blasphemy from the scribes, but Jesus, knowing their thoughts, questions them and heals the man, asserting his authority to forgive sins. The people marvel and glorify God for giving such power to men.
As the narrative progresses, Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector, to follow him, which Matthew does. Later, Jesus dines with many tax collectors and sinners, prompting criticism from the Pharisees. Jesus responds with the famous lines, 'They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick,' and 'I will have mercy, and not sacrifice.' Jesus also addresses a question about fasting, explaining that the time will come for his disciples to fast, but not while he, the bridegroom, is present.
