Matthew Quotes A Threefold Lament The Hebrew Text No Longer Carries

@sovereignlogos·September 18, 2026
Matthew says Herod's slaughter of the infants fulfilled Jeremiah. Read the two Old Testaments side by side and you can see which one he was holding. The Greek reads: "A voice was heard in Rama, of lamentation, and of weeping, and wailing; Rachel would not cease weeping for her children, because they are not." The Hebrew reads: "Thus saith the Lord; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not." Matthew writes: "In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not." Three tells, all pointing the same way. Matthew names three sounds, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning. The Greek carries three. The Hebrew carries two. Matthew says they are not, in the present tense. So does the Greek. The Hebrew says they were not. Matthew opens with the voice itself. So does the Greek. The Hebrew opens with Thus saith the Lord. The apostle was quoting the Septuagint. Note also that this oracle sits at chapter thirty one in the Hebrew arrangement and chapter thirty eight in the Greek, which is why most cross references send you to the wrong page. → Matthew 2:18, Jeremiah 31:15 (KJV), Jeremiah 38:15 (LXX) Read the whole Bible, Septuagint and KJV side by side, at sovereignlogos.com Free Bible app: sovereignlogos.com/app #SovereignLogos #Septuagint #RachelWeeping #Jeremiah #Matthew #BibleStudy #Scripture #KJV #BiblicalTruth #ChristianShorts #BibleExplained #WordOfGod #Jesus #Christianity #OldTestament #NewTestament #BibleVerse #Faith #GreekOldTestament #Prophecy
