The Stone Builders Rejected Is Not Unique to Matthew's Gospel
@sovereignlogos·October 7, 2026
Many believe Matthew 21:42 uniquely captures Jesus speaking about the stone that builders rejected, but this isn't the whole story. Jesus' words are not merely borrowed but quoted verbatim from the Septuagint, the original Greek Old Testament. In Matthew 21:42, Jesus echoes Psalm 118:22. However, in the Septuagint, this corresponds to Psalm 117:22 due to a numbering difference. The critical detail here is that the Masoretic Text, a later redaction, doesn't change this alignment. The stone which the builders rejected indeed is the same in both accounts, becoming the head of the corner. This highlights not only Jesus' deep connection to the scriptures but also authenticates the Septuagint as the truest form of the Old Testament text.
