1HE that seketh vengeance, shal finde vengeance of the Lord, and he wil surely kepe his sinnes. 2Forgiue thy neighbour the hurt that he hathe done to thee, so shal thy sinnes be forgiuen thee also, when thou praiest. 3Shulde a man beare hatred against man, and desire forgiuenes of the Lord? 4He wil shewe no mercie to a man, which is like him self: and wil he aske forgiuenes of his owne sinnes? 5If he that is but flesh, nourishe hatred, [and aske pardone of God,] who wil intreate for his sinnes? 6Remembre the end, & let enimitie passe: imagine not death and destruction to another through angre, but perseuere in the commandements. 7Remember the commandements: so shalt thou not be rigorous against thy neighbour: [consider diligently] the couenant of the moste High, and forgiue his ignorance. 8Beware of strife, & thou shalt make thy sinnes fewer: for an angrie man kindleth strife. 9And the sinful man disquieteth friends, and bringeth in false accusations among them that be at peace. 10As the matter of the fyre is, so it burneth, and mans angre is according to his power: and according to his riches his angre increaseth, and the more vehement the angre is, the more is he inflamed. 11An hastie brauling kindleth a fyre, and an hastie fighting shedeth blood: [a tongue that beareth false witnes, bringeth death.] 12If thou blowe the sparke, it shal burne: if thou spit vpon it, it shal be quenched, and bothe these come out of the mouth. 13Abhorre the sclanderer and double tongued: for suche haue destroyed many that were at peace. 14The double tongue hathe disquieted manie, and driuen them from nacion to nacion: strong cities hathe it broken downe, and ouerthrowen the houses of great men: [the strength of the people hathe it broght downe, & bene the decaye of mightie nacions.] 15The double tongue hathe cast out manie vertuous women, and robbed them of their labours. 16Whoso hearkeneth vnto it, shal neuer finde rest, and neuer dwell quietly. 17The stroke of the rodde maketh markes in the flesh, but the stroke of the tongue breaketh the bones. 18There be manie that haue perished by the edge of the sworde, but not so manie as haue fallen by the tongue. 19Wel is him that is kept from an euil tongue, and cometh not in the angre thereof, which hathe not drawen in that yoke, nether hathe bene bounde in the bandes thereof. 20For the yoke thereof is a yoke of yron, and the bands of it are bandes of brasse. 21The death thereof is an euil death: hell were better then suche one. 22It shal not haue rule ouer them that feare God, nether shal they be burnt with the flame thereof. 23Suche as forsake the Lord, shal fall therein: and it shal burne them, and no man shalbe able to quenche it: it shal fall vpon them as a lyon, and deuoure them as a leopard. 24Hedge thy possession with thornes, and make dores and barres for thy mouth. 25Binde vp thy siluer and golde, & weigh thy wordes in a balance, and make a dore and a barre, [and a sure bridle] for thy mouth. 26Beware that thou slide not by it, and so fall before him that lieth in waite, [and thy fall be incurable, euen vnto death.]
