1IF thou be made the master of the feast, lift not thy self vp, but be among them, as one of the rest: take diligent care for them, and so sit downe. 2And when thou hast done all thy duetie, sit downe, that thou maist be merie with them, and receiue a crowne for thy good behauiour. 3Speake thou that art the elder: for it becometh thee, but with sounde iudgement, and hinder not musicke. 4Powre not out wordes, where there is no audience, and shewe not forthe wisdome out of time. 5The consent of musicians at a banket is as a signet of carbuncle set in golde. 6And as the signet of an emeraude wel trimmed with golde, so is the melodie of musicke in a pleasant banket. 7[Giue eare, and be stil, and for thy good behauiour thou shalt be loued.] 8Thou that art yong, speake if nede: be, and yet scarsely when thou art twise asked. 9Comprehende muche in fewe wordes: [in manie things be as one that is ignorant:] be as one that vnderstandeth, and yet holde thy tongue. 10If thou be among great men, compare not thy self vnto them: and when an elder speaketh, bable not muche. 11Before the thonder goeth lightning, and before a shamefast man goeth fauour. 12Stand vp betimes, and be not the last: but get thee home without delay, 13And there take thy pastime, and do what thou wilt, so that thou do none euil, or vse proude wordes. 14But aboue all things, giue thankes vnto him that hathe made thee, and replenished thee with his goods. 15¶Who so feareth the Lord, wil receiue his doctrine, and they that rise early, shal finde fauour. 16He that seketh the Law, shalbe filled therewith: but the hypocrite wil be offended thereat. 17They that feare the Lord, shal finde that which is righteous, and shal kindle iustice as a light. 18An vngodlie man wil not be reformed, but findeth out excuses according to his wil. 19A man of vnderstanding dispiseth not counsel: but a lewde and proude man is not touched with feare, euen when he hathe done rashly. 20[My sonne,] do nothing without aduisement: so shal it not repent thee after the dede. 21Go not in the way where thou maist fall, nor where thou maist stumble among the stones, nether trust thou in the way that is plaine. 22And beware of thine owne children, [and take hede of them that be thine owne housholde.] 23In euerie good worke be of a faithful heart: for this is the keping of the commandements. 24Who so beleueth in the Lord, kepeth the commandements: and he that trusteth in the Lord, shal take no hurt.
